Lille Metropole, hosting the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic Games
After the EuroBasket in 2015, the Euro football in 2016 and the tennis Davis Cup in 2018, Lille Metropole will continue to host of the world’s some of the most famous sport events in the coming years.
Rugby World Cup 2023
In autumn 2023, France will host the 10th edition of the Rugby World Cup. On this occasion, 5 games will take place at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Lille Metropole and spectators will be able to admire some of the best European teams: France, England and Scotland. A lot of British spectators will cross the English Channel to see their teams play! Pierre-Mauroy Stadium is a multi-use retractable roof stadium of 50.000 seats. A village of activities will be installed to broadcast games and embrace the rugby culture, celebrating #France 2023 as a welcoming and gathering festive event.
The 2024 Olympic Games will occur in Paris, but Lille Metropole has been selected to welcome the handball tournaments, both for men and women. 76 games will be organized and our stadium will be specifically configured to welcome about 30.000 fans to those games. Half of the stadium field is situated on hydraulics lift and massive tracks that raise and slide it above the other half of the field in three hours. This creates a second lower level floor plan where basketball, tennis or music shows can take place. You can watch this impressive process here.
Alike rugby world cup, Lille metropole will display a celebration site, to broadcast games and share the best of the Olympics and Paralympic games including sport and cultural activities. Until then, a vast program of activities and events labelled “Terre de Jeux 2024” will bring along and engage metropolitans on the road to Paris 2024.

A dedicated and passionate team in Lille Metropole is working jointly with the municipalities, Lille’s attractiveness agency (HelloLille) but also all the actors in transport, hotel, culture and sport in the metropolitan area to make those event a great popular celebration and develop sport culture, especially for the youth, all over the territory.
