Metro: Lille Metropole continues its major rolling stock renewal program
Lille Metropole is currently implementing an ambitious program to modernize and renew the rolling stock of its two automatic metro lines. This large-scale investment aims to support the growth of public transport use across the metropolitan area, improve passenger comfort and network capacity, strengthen accessibility for all users, and extend the service life of existing trains.
The program covers both metro lines, with tailored approaches reflecting their specific needs. While Line 2 will benefit from a combination of refurbished trains and new rolling stock in the coming years, Line 1 has now entered a decisive phase with the gradual introduction of new-generation, higher-capacity trains.
Line 1: deployment of new 52-metre BOA trains now underway
In February 2026, Line 1 has entered a decisive phase with the start of the gradual introduction of new-generation 52-metre “BOA” trains manufactured by Alstom. These longer and higher-capacity trains are progressively replacing the existing rolling stock, with the objective of operating the entire line exclusively with 52-metre trains in the coming years.
By February 2028, Line 1 will be operated by a fleet of 42 BOA trains, including the 27 units initially ordered and 15 additional trains approved in December 2024, for a total investment of €209.97 million (excluding tax).
Following large-scale trials conducted in October 2025 and a full “dry run” at the end of January 2026, the new trains are now being progressively introduced into passenger service.
Designed as fully open, inter-circulating trains composed of four connected cars, the BOA trains offer:
50% more capacity, with up to 320 passengers per train
Enhanced accessibility, with four dedicated multi-purpose spaces for passengers with reduced mobility
Improved comfort, with brighter, more spacious interiors and smooth passenger circulation
Upgraded passenger information systems, including multimedia displays
More energy-efficient operation, thanks to LED lighting and regenerative electric braking
These trains mark a major step forward in the modernization of Line 1 and significantly improve the quality and reliability of service.
Line 2: a combined approach of refurbishment and renewal
On Line 2, Lille Metropole is implementing a comprehensive program combining the refurbishment of existing trains and the gradual renewal of the fleet. Currently operated with 90 trains of types VAL206 and VAL208, Line 2 will benefit from a dual effort aimed at maintaining performance in the short term while preparing for long-term renewal.
Refurbishment of existing VAL208 trains
The 60 VAL208 trains currently in service on Line 2, introduced from 1999 onwards, will undergo a complete refurbishment program. The objective is to extend their operational lifespan to up to 45 years or 4 million kilometers, compared with approximately 2.5 million kilometers today.
This refurbishment program will:
Extend the service life of the trains by an additional 15 years
Improve reliability and overall performance
Enhance accessibility, notably through the creation of new multi-purpose areas suitable for wheelchair users
Modernise both interior and exterior design to improve passenger comfort and network attractiveness
The refurbishment works will be carried out between 2027 and 2031, with approximately 12 trains renovated each year. The total investment amounts to €110.2 million (excluding tax).
Preparation for new generation rolling stock
In parallel, MEL is preparing the future renewal of Line 2 through the planned procurement of new-generation VAL208 trains. This process would allow for the first delivery of new trains from July 2028 onwards.
Additionally, Line 2 will benefit from the gradual transfer of 26-metre trains released from Line 1 as the new BOA fleet is introduced, ensuring continuity of service and operational flexibility during the transition period.
